2015 Veterans Championship – Results

The 2015 Veterans Championship attracted 68 starters – A Grade 18, B Grade 22 and C Grade 28.  Thirteen players did not return a card in the final round leaving a final field of 55 players.

Four members played to their handicap or better for the Championship – John Skerry, Allan Corke, David Von Itzstein and Joe Lehkyj. Another fourteen members achieved the outcome in one round of the Championship. John Skerry played inside his handicap in both rounds and turned in the best overall Championship performance being 7 strokes below handicap across both rounds.

David Von Itzstein is the 2015 Veterans Club Champion.  David’s success was achieved by playing the best round of the Stroke Championship, an outstanding 76 final round.  Runner Up, Joe Lehkyj provided a strong Round 1 performance but like the field could not match David’s last day blitz.  John Edwards also played well in the first round and laid the foundation for winning the A Grade Nett.  The A Grade Nett Runner Up was a close contest between Cliff Henderson and Danny Minogue who tied on 144.  Cliff’s final round of 84/68 resulted in Cliff taking the trophy from Danny on countback.

John Skerry was the clear winner of the B Grade Championship. Runner Up, Veterans’ Captain Wayne Howlett also played well taking second place ahead of the recently appointed Men’s Captain Max Jessop.  The B Grade Nett was won by Steve Williams who was only one over his handicap for the two rounds.  The B Grade Nett Runner Up was also a close competition between Ron White and Club President, Ken Culpitt who tied on 145.  Ron’s final round of 92/70 placed him as Runner Up on countback.

The C Grade Championship was won by Greg Seymour who carded a terrific C Grade first round of 92.  John Gilroy closed the gap on the last day but finished one stroke short and was Gross Runner Up.  Allan Corke playing off a handicap of 36 demonstrated he can break 100, finished the Championship under handicap and is the C Grade Nett winner. C Grade Nett Runner Up, Robert Giles also had a very consistent Championship finishing one over his handicap over the two rounds.

Congratulations to all Championship prize winners and thank you to the members who supported the Championship.  Trophies will be presented at the Veterans Christmas Function.

Well done to the Veterans’ Captain and his Sub Committee for their management of the Championship and special mention of Wayne Martlew for his efforts with assembling the Championship scores.

Wayne Muir – Strong Lexus Cup Performance

Well known member, Wayne Muir has turned in outstanding performances in recent days including 43 Stableford points mid-week and a Saturday Monthly Medal Stroke Nett 65.

Wayne’s terrific results have taken him to 1sT place Club Banora and 1St place NSW plus 2nd place Nationally for Week 9 of Series Two, 2015 Lexus Cup.

Congratulations Wayne, for this great result in a competition with 93,614 players including over 175 from Club Banora.

Men’s September Monthly Medal

The Men’s September Monthly Medal Round was dominated by two great Nett scores of 65 by Wayne Muir playing off 15 and Men’s Sub Committee Member Mike Mills playing off 23. Great golf guys!

Seven other members also played to their handicap or better, Lee Whichello, Brian Britton, Hayden Gilbank, James Storey, Ron Roberts, Michael Grills and Bjarne Sorensen. Well done.

The top nine finishers clearly best handled the fast greens and the three or four difficult pin placements. The pin placement at the 4th Hole made the first putt extremely delicate after approaches above the hole.

A talking point at presentation was the challenge of putting where three putts were a part of most member rounds.

The least successful putting effort was an eight putt which the player’s marker described as 7 putts from within a meter and a half. For those who could be forgiven for thinking the eight putt would be fairly easy, the story goes that it looped the hole before falling in!

Aren’t Stroke competitions fun.
