30 Jan Update – System and Competition

Twin Towns IT continues to monitor the Golf system server and we are finding periods where the system operates at an acceptable level although the system response drops off significantly with heavy use.

This means that members are generally able to view On-Line Results and make Time Sheet Bookings through the web.

The Men’s Captain has uploaded Competitions from last Wednesday and Saturday.

Yesterday’s competition results are now fully in the system although the Rundown will not be finalised until tomorrow morning. It is expected that the upload of the results to GolfLink will follow shortly afterwards.

Today’s Ladies Opening Day Competition used printed scorecards and the Leader Board displayed team results as players waited for presentation. Team score cards were entered into the system by Match Committee members rather than players due to Touch Screen issues.

Focus is now on ensuring the system is able to support Saturday’s Monthly Medal and Medal of Medal competitions, hopefully with the Touch Screens in operation.

Update – Computer System and Website Issues

Since the implementation of the Slope System changes, the Golf system server is increasingly becoming slower. System overheads eventually bring the Golf software to a stop.  Website Time Sheets and On-line Results do not respond during this period.  This is a frustration for members, the Pro Shop, Captains and those of us working as hard as we can to resolve the problem.

Priority is being given to printing scorecards with the Daily Handicap on the night before.  Pro Shop staff are thanked for staying late to achieve this outcome.

The latest Touch Screen program is installed and correctly uses Daily Handicaps when calculating results.  A mouse is attached to each Touch Screen at the request of members who like the mouse.  The Touch Screen suffers from the slowing server effect and the earlier competition players find it possible to input results while later players struggle.

Along with the software supplier, Twin Towns IT is assisting with solving the server problem and will be onsite early tomorrow morning (Wednesday, 29 Jan).  Player scorecards are printed for starters up to 8.30 am.  It is anticipated that a server fix or reset will allow player cards through to 11 am to be printed at time of arrival.

Playing results from Monday 20 Jan and today are uploaded to GolfLink for handicapping.  Results from last Wednesday are ready for upload and a few more results from Saturday need to be updated with Daily Handicaps prior to upload.    Thank you to Men’s Captain, Mike Flanagan and Sub Committee member Clint Dunn for their ‘back room’ contribution to prepare the upload records.

Every effort is being made to have all outstanding results sent to GolfLink by COB Friday so that Daily Handicaps will be correct for Saturday’s Monthly Medal and Medal of Medals competitions.

Members tolerance during this challenging period is appreciated.

Medal of Medals Play Off

Saturday 1st February is the Medal of Medals Championship Play Off for Monthly Medal winners for the year February 2013 to January 2014.

36 possible places are reduced to 29 Members who are scheduled to play in this restricted elite competition.

The 36 are reduced by 2 visitors who won medals in March and November and Board Member Brian Brown B Grade winner in May who is on the injury list.

3 members have great credentials leading to the play off and could be considered to contain the 2014 Medal of Medals winner. Wayne Howlett, Lyall Dowling and Gary Mann each won two Monthly Medals in 2013 – wonderful effort guys!

Members will be able to track the Medal of Medals Championship on 1 February via the Leader Board and the website.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL QUALIFERS and BEST OF LUCK TO ALL.

Slope System Introduction – 25 January

25 January was Club Banora’s first competition day under the new Slope system. It was a Saturday Stableford event off the Blue Tees, Rated Slope 131 and with a Course Scratch rating of 73.

Member scorecards correctly showed their Daily Handicap which for most members was the same as the handicap they were on in recent weeks. A small number of members gained an extra handicap stroke to play off the Blue tees.

There was a system problem for members playing off plus figures. Different parts of the computer system showed the GA and Daily Handicaps in different ways. A Plus handicap of 4 was shown as 4, -4 and +4 on different screens. The calculation of the Daily Handicap for plus figure members also appears to be incorrect. It is anticipated that the plus figure issue will be rectified by next Saturday.

A major issue on the day was that an old version of the Touch Screen program was used by members to enter their results. A consequence was that competition results were based on GA Handicaps and not Daily Handicaps.

Congratulations to the Men’s Captain and his Match Committee for working through the challenge ensuring that winners and rundown results were fair to all players, even if their playing results were lower than they might have been.

The updated version of the Touch Screen program is now installed and should correctly show and use the player’s Daily Handicap.

The Slope change is a substantial and complex one that could only be implemented by the use of computers.

Thanks to members for bearing with the Match Committees as we bed down the implementation.

Thank you to Mitch in the Pro shop who stayed back late on Friday night to make sure member scorecards were printing correctly and also to Ian for testing that the system should work correctly for the Veterans competition on 27 January.

Passing of Ray Holmes – Life Celebration on 3 February

It is with sadness that we note the passing of Ray Holmes this morning.

Ray was one of nature’s gentlemen who loved golf and was a tireless worker for the Vets and golf generally. He was the backbone of the Gentlemen’s Three Putt Club.

Ray was very popular with all and well respected. He was known for his calling of the room to order – ‘Gentlement Please’ when the President or Captain was ready to speak.

Our thoughts and sympathy are with June and we recognise the great love and friendship that she and Ray shared.

A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at Club Banora on 3 February from 2-5pm in the Tuscany Room.  Members are invited to come along and tell stories about how Ray left a lasting impression on them.
