Competition 22 September 2013

Congratulation to Competition Day Sponsors, Danny and Mary Minogue (pictured below) for their 22 September Mixed Pinehurst event. It recognised exactly what the members needed a week out from the Medley Foursome Championship and demonstrated how sponsors can contribute a bit extra to Sunday Golf at Club Banora. Thanks also for your winners prizes. Well done guys!

While Danny, as Men’s Representative, normally introduces and presents Sunday prizes, President, Ken Culpitt, took on the introduction task to be able to thank Danny and Mary for the sponsorship.  Ken commented on the enjoyable day and also that his wife Denise noted that she was put in 4 bunkers on the first 5 Holes.  The comment sparked similar remarks from other teams.  Ken said that, he and Denise enjoyed playing with the day’s lowest scores the Wilkinsons, Kelly and son Brad, who both played very well.  Brad hit the ball long and Kelly brought a good short game.  With Dad, Steve, the Wilkinsons are also good Club sponsors providing pizza prizes from their Galileo’s  Pizza Café at Banora Point on Men’s Monthly Medal Day.

Good scores were posted on the day with 6 teams playing better than their handicap. The Rundown went to 75 and included handicap ‘beaters’ the Hughes, Giles (welcome back after adventures in Asia), Maria Anesbury and Woody (good to see Woody on Sunday) and Cliff Henderson and Pat Hodda.

Congratulation to the Day’s winners Ken and Judy Mount who also played well within handicap and were very worthy winners. Ken and Judy are pictured below responding to the sponsors after receiving their prize.  Ken described their enjoyment of the day and also said he was a recent winner of a Monthly Medal Day pizza.  He thanked the Wilkinsons for the prize as well as speaking highly of the pizza he selected.

Well done also to Kelly and Brad who received the Runner Up prize for their fine play.

Special congratulations to Ladies Pennant Team member, Rhoda Way, who collected 3 Nearest The Pins – 3rd, 8th and 16th.  Outstanding effort Rhoda!

In the picture foreground can be seen the lucky draw bucket with its North Estate Agents logo.  North is a main sponsor of the Club providing funds towards Championships, Melbourne Cup day competition, pennant shirts and the lucky draw on Saturdays and Sundays.  Thank you North.

This Sunday has provided the preparation for the Medley Foursome Championship next week.

Thanks Mary and Danny for the day.

Passing of Mary Hogan

After a long hard fought battle Mary Hogan passed away this morning. All her friends within the Golf community at Club Banora offer our greatest sympathy to Ross and her greater family. Mary was a devoted golfer who worked tirelessly for Ladies Golf as handicapper, managing golflink updates and assisting Captains with competition results. Golf at Club Banora benefits from her long term participation and contribution.

Mary’s life celebration service will be held at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Tweed Heads on Saturday 21 September at 10am.

Report 7 Sep – Monthly Medal and Gordon Jones Memorial Day

The 7 September Monthly Medal Day provided an opportunity to host the first Gordon Jones Memorial Day.  The day was a significant tribute to Gordon’s love of Golf and was well supported by his golfing friends and members of his church fellowship.

The Golf Club President, Ken Culpitt, in his opening remarks at the Presentation reflected on Gordon’s love of Golf and of  his colourful and friendly way including his ‘famous’ red slacks which were said to be worn to church on occasions.   That Gordon was a good club man was noted and also that Gordon finished his golf playing some of his best Golf.  He was a regular NTP winner.  A good gauge of Gordon’s love of Golf was that he typically played on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.  Ken concluded by saying that it is no wonder why we are here today remembering and celebrating Gordon’s Golfing achievements.

Gordon’s wife, Jacqui thanked the Golf Club for supporting the Memorial Day and for remembering Gordon’s enjoyment of playing golf.  These sentiments were reinforced by Tony Deguara on behalf of the church and special appreciation was expressed for a church member who covered the competition fees for players in the church Memorial Competition.

The major prize for the Memorial day was a perpetual trophy and a ‘to keep’ set of exquisite bohemian crystal glasses and carafe set.  Congratulations to the inaugural Gordon Jones Memorial winner and September A Grade Monthly winner Ben Brown. Ben can be seen below with Jacqui receiving his perpetual trophy.

Competition was strong within the church component of the Memorial Day competition where Jacqui presented three prizes.  Congratulations to first prize winner, Paul Roberts shown in the photo below receiving his prize from Jacqui.

Second prize went to Daphne Anderson who battled the strong wind to play some of her best recent golf.  Well done Daphne pictured below receiving her prize from Jacqui.

Third prize went to Tony Deguara who played a major part in the organisation of the day strongly supporting Jacqui to ensure the day was the success it was.  Well done Tony on a top day both on and off the course.  Tony is shown below receiving his prize from Jacqui.

Congratulations to September Monthly Medal winners, A Grade – Ben Brown, B Grade – Frank Watego and C Grade – Graeme Johnson and also to the 16 Qualifiers for the 2013 Match Play Championship.  Full details of Monthly Medal results and Match play qualification are included in the on-line results and other current Committee blogs.

Report Sunday 8 Sep – Texas Four Ball

The sponsors for Sunday 8 September, Bernard and Daphne Anderson along with Pauline Ryan and Max Jessop,  offered a Texas Four Ball competition with all scores to count.  This was variation on recent weeks where team scores were based on best 3 scores.  The all scores requirement meant there was no place to hide and all team members need to be well focused on every shot.

In very blustery conditions teams did just that and eight of the teams averaged 40 Stableford points or more per team member.  These team were prize winners or included in the rundown.  The handicap matching average per player 36 points was surpassed by the other teams.

It was good to see the whole field respond in such a very creditable way.

Following is a photo of the Sponsors being briefed by the Men’s Sub Committee representative, Danny Minogue, prior to the presentation announcement.  Danny is far left with Bernard next left, then Pauline (centre), Daphne (off centre right) and Max (far right).

The parent / sibling combination of Roy and Bev Culpitt and Donny and Denise Culpitt stole the day with a decisive 5 shot win and an average of 43 points per player.  Superb tee shots at the Par 3 – 8th by Don and Denise, 12th by Don and 16th by Bev setup four of the 18 holes for substantial team scores – all 10 points and mostly more.  Needless to say these names dominated the NTP prizes awarded on the day.  Well played and congratulations to the winners shown in the photo below where Roy is responding on behalf of the team after receiving their prize from the sponsor.  Roy’s joke was also appreciated by the group.  In the photo Roy has the mike with Don shadowed behind and next to Denise, then Bev with Bernard behind Daphne, Pauline and Max.

Runner Up was a close competition and decided by count back.  Initially is was thought that Team Roy & Judy Stephen and Barry & Bev Jurd were runner up but score card checking revealed that Team Stewart & Denise Melling and John Skerry and Rhoda Way had recorded at the touch screen their back and front nine scores in reverse order.  Once this was recognised and corrected they moved into the Runner Up position.  Congratulations to both teams and well done to the Runners Up.

Team ‘sponsors’ played well and achieved a score good enough to be in the Rundown.

Thank you to the sponsors, Bernard & Daphne Anderson and Pauline Ryan & Max Jessop for your prizes and a terrific competition.  The every shot counts format provides a very useful lead into the Medley Championship which is to be played over 27 holes on 29 September.
