2014 Handicap Match Play Championship Final

What a great final!  Congratulations to Ray Mills and Stephen Evans for a very exciting final that was reflected in the tightness of the last hole.

Following is a photo of Ray (left) and Stephen (right) when they returned to the Half Way House.

2014HandicapMatchPlayChamps

The A Grade quality of Ray’s game was evident from the first tee and also that Stephen was a credible finalist.  Stephen was steady beyond his handicap and was 2 up after three Holes.

Some handicapping reality then ensured and Ray’s ability turned the competition to the extent that he dominated and as Stephen lost three balls,  Ray lead by 3 after the outward 9 Holes.  Ray’s first 9 was only 4 over Par and would have been extremely competitive in every match of the Championship.

The back 9 was a complete contrast.  While Ray continued to be solid, Stephen played some of his best ever Golf with Pars at 10, 12, 13 and 15 – not bad for a player off 27!

The Championship Match was tied after 17 Holes completed.

The intensity of the final hole of a Club Championship kicked in.  Stephen had a shot over Ray off the tee.  Wayward shots down the 18th fairway reflected the stress on the players.  By the time the green was reached and Ray putted out for 7, Stephen was left with a moderate eight shot putt to take the match to an extra hole.  The putt was good but missed by a few centimetres, sufficient for Ray to become the 2014 Handicap Match Play Champion.

Congratulations to Ray on your Championship win.  Every single figure player and more recognise the significance of your win over an opponent with 20 shots start, especially when your opponent played well beyond reasonable expectation.

Ray and Stephen can be seen below receiving their Championship prizes from Club Captain, Mike Flanagan.

Sharp Motors Men’s Monthly Medal – June 14

Thank you to members for their strong support of the June Monthly Medal sponsored by Sharp Motors.   It is a credit to the players that the field moved freely around the course with only a few short hold ups at the long Par 3s where many players were taking two shots to reach the green.  The large shot gun start field completed the stroke round in about 4 and a half hours.  Not unreasonable for a stroke event.

Beyond the good day on the course, members enjoyed Club Banora Golf at its best as they celebrated the new Sharp Motors sponsorship arrangements over a snack and a cold drink.  Well done to the Men’s Captain, Mike Flanagan and his sub-committee for the day’s organisation and to Twin Towns’ staffers, Pam and Mary who provided their usual high stand of service to members.

It is also helpful to recognise the hours of effort put in by Mike and Sharp Motors Business Development Manager, Chris Bent in developing the Sharp Motors sponsorship.  At the Presentation Chris outlined Sharp’s interest in strengthening the relationship with the Golf Club and particularly that  Sharp Motors are offering members great deals on Holden, HSV, Honda, Kia and Suzuki new and used cars.  Beyond the competitive vehicle price, Sharp Motors will provide the Golf Club with $150 for each member car sale.  Chris said he would take special interest to ensure Golf Club members are well looked after.

Sharp Motors are the major sponsor for Men’s Monthly Medal and the Men’s Club Championship.  The sponsorship includes prizes for Medal winners in three grades,  Nearest The Pins and 2nd at 6th along with other novelty prizes.  The NTP offer is extended to each Saturday.  Thank you to Sharp Motors for increasing the quality of competition prizes.  A special $250 raffle prize was provided for the June Medal Day.  Nice win Dave Harrod who can be seen below receiving his prize from Chris.  Dave had a great day and also won two NTPs.

MajorDrawWinner

The course on the day proved very challenging with only the B Grade Medal winner playing to handicap.  The wet fairways restricted run and strong wind during the round contributed to the high scores.

Congratulations to A Grade Medal winner, David Von Itzstein who playing off 9 had the equal lowest gross score of the day, 79.   David can be seen below receiving his winners prize from Sharp Motors representative, Chris and Men’s Club Captain, Mike.

AgradeWinner

The B Grade medal winner was Jim Leuver.  Well done Jim, for the outstanding handicap matching round, clearly the best effort on the day.  At presentation pictured below, Jim noted that this was his first Monthly Medal win in a long career playing golf.

BGradeWinner

Congratulations also to Bill Ward, C Grade Medal winner with a Nett 70.

Special mention and well done also to runners up, A Grade – Brian Brown, B Grade – Steve Axelby and C Grade Neil Hourigan who can be seen in order below receiving their prizes.  Neil also won the Galileo Pizza for the best Secret 6 Holes competition.

It was a great day to be part of Club Banora Golf.

2014 Scratch Match Play Champions

Congratulations to the 2014 Scratch Match Play Champions.

The 2014 A Grade and Club Scratch Match Play Champion is Michael Wood. Michael was successful in the final over Ray Mills 4 & 2.

At presentation Ray said ‘I was not at my best today’ although Michael noted that Ray scrambled very capably and stayed in the competition with some terrific pitches and putts.

Michael is the Club’s lowest handicap member playing off 2 and is our lead pennant player. Michael attributed his win to feeling mentally strong on the day and to playing to his game strength of hitting greens in regulation. Well done Michael – your consistent golf makes you a worthy Champion. Following Michael (centred) can be seen with runner-up Ray (left) after receiving his Champion’s trophy from Men’s Captain Mike Flanagan. In the foreground is the ‘lucky draw bucket’ of the Golf Club’s major sponsor, North Estate of Tweed Heads.

ScratchChampsA

The Club B Grade Scratch Match Play Champion is Michael Grills who was thrilled to achieve his first Championship win. Michael won comfortably 4 & 3 over Terry Baker who found the pressure of the final impacting a little more than expected on his swing. The Champion also found the intensity of the final significant and described his play like that of Hogan – Ben Hogan when he controlled his swing and Paul Hogan when he did not. In any event good job Michael and congratulations on your Championship win. Below Michael is seen in triumph after receiving his Champion’s trophy from the Men’s Captain.

The C Grade Scratch Match Play Champion is John Lane who defeated Barry Southgate 3 & 2. The match was played in a very amiable spirit. At presentation John noted the good companionship provided by the A Grade finalists, Michael and Ray as assisting him with delivering the extra concentration needed to be competitive in a Club Championship final. He also commented that Graeme Johnson had helped him in his campaign though the Championship (well something like that). Good win John. John is seen below responding after being presented with his Champion’s trophy by the Men’s Captain.

The Captain and Committee thanks all members who participated in the qualification round and congratulates members who played in the elimination stage of the Championship which culminated in yesterday’s finals.

Also thank you to the members who attended the Champions presentation and joined in the celebration with the winners.

Sunday Competition 4 May – How Good?

A strong breeze, autumn temperatures and the wettest course since late 2013 made the Sunday 4 May 4BBB Stableford Medley competition very challenging.

Five teams scored the standard 36 Stableford points or better.

The best performance of the day when to the unlikely combination of Eunice Pleasance and Steven Dodd with an age difference of hardly 60 years.

Steven playing off 6, hit the ball long and was consistently well placed to score points. Some solid putts also helped the team cause.

By contrast Eunice playing off 31, played her steady down the middle game restricted by the heavy conditions but sufficient to deliver enough team points to meaningfully contribute to the one shot win.

How good – Well done Eunice and Steve.

Following is a photo of Eunice receiving the winner’s prize from the day’s presenter, Vice President Rosie Connolly who was the winner of the daily single Stableford competition.

Runners Up Ken and Denise Culpitt, one shot back also played well, particularly on the second 9.

Congratulations also to other teams in the rundown, the Coopers – Keith and Maren and Colleen Johns & Barry Hughes.

Roy and Bev Culpitt scored a credible 36 points but missed out on the rundown by count back.

Well done to all competition players in a field that was down due to members playing away.

Following is a photo of the Stephen’s, Malley’s and Mount’s (Judy in photo – Ken on Camera) absent at Tenterfield and rugged up for the competition.

Members basking in the sun at Banora agreed that playing at home has its advantages.

Garry Carey – Major Winner – 1 Feb 14

Garry Carey dominated the Saturday 1 February monthly stroke competition.

Garry qualified for the Medal of Medals playoff through his A Grade Monthly Medal win in November 2013.

Teeing off in the first group of Medal of Medals players Garry set a sub handicap pace (Nett 71) that the chasers in the field could not match.

Congratulation Garry, 2014 Medal of Medals Champion seen below receiving the perpetual trophy from Men’s Club Captain, Mike Flanagan.

Garry’s score was also good enough to win today’s Monthly Medal ensuring that he qualifies for the 2015 Medal of Medals play off.

The Pro Shop Blue Marker Challenge Nett prize also went home with Garry and a box of balls for breaking his handicap making Garry’s prize pool value for the day over $250.

At the presentation Garry said this was his first Medal of Medals win and that he needed to wait until he was in the 70s to achieve this prestigious outcome.

Beyond today’s one off outcome Garry said he really enjoyed Golf at Club Banora and highly valued the course quality and the friendships.

Terrific Day Garry!

Also on the day’s winner list was Jim Leuver (left) and Ray Mills (right) seen below collecting their prizes from the Men’s Captain. Well done guys!
